Paul Garrison from Royal Bighorn Lodge
Thank you to the Royal Bighorn Lodge members and manager Paul Garrison for a great week of fishing on the Alagnak. The state of the Alagnak is that many of the Chum Salmon have spawned and died, the King Salmon are at the end of their spawn, there still some Silver Salmon trickling in and are just about ready to spawn. The bead fishing for Rainbow Trout is still productive and now drifting flesh patterns is starting to heat up. The Trout are fed and growing very large. Come fish the Alagnak next fall with Alaska Adventures.

Alaska Adventures captures another picture of a big Rainbow caught by client Jim P. from Maryland up on the lower Kukaklek River. Jim waded across some gravel flats and dead drifted his 10mm painted bead to attract this big bow.

Silver Salmon Fishing
Fishing on the Alagnak River continues to amaze clients and keep all anglers very content with the size, quantity, and species of fish caught. Silver Salmon fishing heated up this week and anglers all had the opportunity to stay overnight at our spike camp on the lower river and catch a few. The best day of silver fishing was two anglers that caught 40 Silvers in one day. There is nothing better then top water Silver Salmon action! Trout, Char, and Grayling fishing is great right around camp.

Silver Salmon Fishing
There are many different strategies to catching Silver Salmon. Right now on the lower Alagnak adult Coho’s are holding in pools until they ripen, then will move further upriver onto spawning grounds in the upper braids. Fish are moving aggressively across slow pools on the lower Alagnak to inhale Pink articulated leaches on sink tips as well as traditional spin tackle. Guides are positioning above pools with logjams and big slow water eddies both from anchored boats or wading from land if possible. The most acrobatic of the Pacific Salmon anglers are catching fish that weight 8-12 pounds and are 24-30 inches long. Come to the Alagnak and fly fish for Silver Salmon!

Even though it was a hot and sunny day we had three boats decide to leave red hot trout fishing on the upper Alagnak and go downriver to fish the early Silver Salmon Run! Each boat landed a handful of hard fighting Silvers, lots of rainbows, and of course some Chums. The Alagnak has seen 5 strait days of sunshine and seen the trout fishing become very productive and the numbers of trout landed increase with the spawning salmon. Egg patterns and egg sucking leaches prove successful. Come fish the Alagnak River with Alaska Adventures and experience some of the best wild Rainbow Trout fishing in the world!

Little Kukaklek River Rainbows
The summer is going by so fast! King Salmon season is over and Fall is quickly approaching. The report is that sporties where catching Silvers in Naknek a week ago and now even in the Kvichak (queejack), so we expect Silvers to be in the Alagnak in a week or two. In the upper Alagnak we are starting to fish behind newly spawning Chum and Kings for Rainbows & Char. Anglers caught a mixed bag of Chums, Kings, Rainbows, Grayling, Dollies, and a occasional Sockeye and Pink Salmon this week. Most anglers also got the chance to take our trip up to the “little Kukaklek” or what we call “Bear Creek”, a tributary of Kukaklek Lake, where most of the Sockeye Salmon go to spawn. Our trips were timed perfect for sight fishing for Rainbows amongst the masses of Reds and to view the Katmai Brown Bears that feed upon them.

River Kings
Despite their late arrival, the kings have entered the river and are now being caught with frequency in our area of the upper river. These beautiful, powerful fish will test your equipment and your knots. Today one of our favorite and longest standing clients, Dave Dlubak, managed to land this beautiful forty three inch buck on a red and white fly. We had to chase him down with the boat to land him but, ultimately, we proved victorious and landed the brute. Nicely done Dave.

Hike for Pike
For the first time this year we took a group of clients on our scenic hike for pike. About a mile up Nonvianuk river lies a trailhead that meanders through low, green spruce stands and across verdant mossy tundra, ultimately depositing you at a beautiful, glacial lake. This picturesque body of water teems with hungry pike, eager to attack most any offering that is tossed their way. While these are not the twenty pound monsters found in some areas, we do catch fish between thirty five and forty inches. Our trip this year lived up to all our expectations, a beautiful day with plenty of fish for all.
